Information Technology Suite, Glasgow
Client: The High School of Glasgow
Contract value: £800,000 Completed: April 2003
This vertical extension to form 4 new computer classrooms and ancillary rooms involved inserting mini-piling and erecting a steel support structure over existing accommodation during the summer vacation. The new classrooms are air-conditioned and fitted with perimeter and floor trunking to support 26 workstations. A new stair links the suite to the school.
The extension is the third phase of this development, which previously provided a purpose built Drama Studio with control room, an English department and 7 Music Practice Rooms. The tiled pitched roof and facing brick walls are carefully designed to integrate the appearance of the new suite with the adjoining existing premises. A cantilevered corner oversails the roadway below, and is tile hung to minimise structural weight.
A new base for P.E. staff was also built concurrently, with matching materials and the introduction of untreated timber cladding to visually differentiate the spatial elements.
Completed on programme, the new Suite was fitted out during the school holidays to commence use in September 2003.
